A transesophogeal echocardiogram (TEE) is done to visualize the heart muscle and the heart valves via the esophagus. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown upon arrival to the department. Once the doctor arrives, the technologist will spray a numbing medicine in your throat. You will also be given some medicine to help you relax through an IV. Once your throat is numb, you will be asked to swallow to help pass the tube. The procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete; however, you will remain in our recovery area for another 2 – 4 hours. You may eat after your gag reflex returns.
You must have someone drive you home. You will not be able to drive for 24 hours after the procedure.
Where the Patient Should Enter
