North Fulton Regional Hospital – Roswell, GA (May 2009) – Driving is a responsibility. The safety of those on the road and in our cars warrants careful attention to our abilities behind the wheel. North Fulton Regional Hospital is pleased to respond to this safety need by offering an AARP Driver Safety Program on June 8 and 10.
This eight-hour course, spread out over two days and taught by a certified driver instructor, is designed mainly for the driver who is 50 and older to help him or her maintain mobility and independence. For many participants, 50-60 years have passed since their initial driving test. A lot has changed in this span of time, from the basic rules of the road to the actual style of cars.
Some of the topics this course will cover include:

general driving laws;

how to compensate for changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time;

how to handle special situations, rights of way, freeway traffic, trucks and busses, blind spots;

how to handle an aggressive driver;
-
how medications may affect driving;
-
how to use anti-lock brakes, air bags, safety belts;
-
how to assess our own or a loved one’s ability to drive;

and much more!
Upon completing the program, graduates should understand the effects of aging on driving and be able to reduce their chances of having an accident. Most automobile insurance companies offer up to a 15% discount for three years on insurance premiums for those who successfully complete the program. The program will take place at North Fulton Regional Hospital on Monday and Wednesday, June 8 and 10, from 10 am – 2:30 pm. The cost is $14 per person or $12 per person with an AARP card.
