Many people struggle with the burning discomfort of heartburn, interfering with their ability to enjoy the simplest of pleasures.  North Fulton Hospital is here to help you manage and treat this discomfort and educate you on your options.

Located in the Medical Office Building, the Endoscopy Suite is staffed with dedicated nurses and physicians trained in the treatment of heartburn-related conditions and other endoscopy issues.

A series of tests may be required to determine your needs that might include the following:
  • Manometry Study – tests the functioning of the esophagus
  •  Bravo pH Study – 48-hour pH study using a capsule that measures time, severity and length of reflux
  •  24-hour pH Study – pH study using a catheter that measures time, severity and length of reflux

GERD

When the discomfort of heartburn happens more than twice a week, it could be a sign of a more serious condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

GERD happens when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, the tube that carries food down the throat into the stomach.

Along with chronic heartburn, other signs of GERD may include:

  • Acid reflux
  • Non-cardiac chest pain
  •  Coughing
  •  Trouble swallowing
  •  Hoarseness
  •  Sore throat

Left untreated, GERD can lead to serious health problems, including bleeding and precancerous changes in the esophagus.

At North Fulton Hospital, we offer the following treatment options for GERD:
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures
  •  Barrax Ablation
  •  Comprehensive medical treatment
