NFH Maternity Program Recognized for having International Board Certified Lactation Consultants
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners recently awarded North Fulton Hospital with the IBCLC Care Award. This award is intended to honor and recognize those maternity facilities worldwide that hire International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).
In order to achieve this recognition, North Fulton Hospital had to meet 3 criteria:
- One or more professional lactation consultant support positions with IBCLC as the required credential, and a lactation program available 5-7 days a week
- Completion of a project within the last two years that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding with a project description and documentation
- Documentation of breastfeeding training/updates within the last two years for nursing, medical, and other health professional staff who care for new families
“Our Maternity Program is highly focused on what the patient wants,” explains Angie Busch, Director of Women’s Health at North Fulton Hospital. “We do everything in our power to ensure that the mother’s birthing experience goes according to her plans. This includes providing lactation consultations, as many of our mom’s want information about breastfeeding.”
NFH is one of six Georgia Hospitals listed as an IBCLC Care Facility. Others include: Athens Regional Medical Center – Athens, GA; DeKalb Medical, North Decatur – Decatur, GA; Henry Medical Center – Stockbridge, GA; Rockdale Medical Center – Conyers, GA; The Medical Center of Central Georgia – Macon, GA.
The IBCLC Care Directory lists recognized hospitals, birthing facilities, and birthing services that hire currently certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and have a professional lactation support program available 5-7 days a week. These facilities also have demonstrated they have provided training for their nursing, medical, and other staff that care for breastfeeding families, and have implemented special projects that promote, protect, and support breastfeeding.
“We are proud of this award as it recognizes not only our commitment to provide certified lactation professionals but also our desire to remain on the leading edge when it comes to personalized care for our new moms.” Said Busch.
