Blood pressure and cholesterol checks are typical fare at most health fairs.  Bingo, dancing, exercise classes, wii games, and other such fun activities are not quite so common.  North Fulton Regional Hospital combined fun with health last week at the first annual More to Life program, a wellness event for active adults 55+ held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park.

Attendance at the event topped 300 as people from senior living communities, senior centers, and the general community came out in groups.  The first-time event included:

  • Free health screenings, such as blood pressure, bone density, body mass index, cholesterol, glucose, and hearing
  • Fun activities, such as bingo, arts and crafts, board games, dancing, exercise classes, brain fitness, and more
  • Live entertainment
  • Backstage tour of the amphitheatre
  • lunch

The location of the event proved to be an exciting addition as well.  Every activity took place in a different backstage room at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park.  From the VIP club to dressing rooms to the private artist patios, attendees had the opportunity to gain access to areas not traditionally seen by the general public.  Many even got the opportunity to walk out onto the main stage, a feature of the all access backstage tour.

Helping to make this event the success it became were the many senior living communities and senior centers that provided the activities.  Each activity was hosted and coordinated by a facility/center, allowing for greater variety in the program.  This collaboration added value to the event and gave representatives of the various senior living facilities and senior centers an opportunity to mix and mingle with colleagues in the senior industry.  Those who participated in the event through activities and entertainment included: Arbor Terrace at Crabapple, Belmont Village of Buckhead, Belmont Village of Johns Creek, Chambrel of Roswell, Dogwood Forest of Alpharetta, Freedom Pointe of Roswell, The Gardens of Sandy Springs/Court of Sandy Springs, Merrill Gardens of Roswell, Merrill Gardens of Dunwoody, Parc Communities, Roswell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Roswell Adult Activity Center, Senior Services North Fulton, Somerby of Alpharetta, St. George Village, Sunrise at Huntcliff Summit, The Veranda, Waterford Gardens, and Woodstock Estates.

Lunch and lounging on the patio proved to be a great choice

As a result of the success of More to Life, North Fulton Regional Hospital looks forward to offering this event again in 2010.
