North Fulton Regional Hospital welcomes the addition of PACS, Picture Archiving and Communication System, to the Radiology Department. This computer-based system digitally processes and displays medical images taken of patients.
“This acquisition is a big win for us here at North Fulton Regional Hospital,” says Judy Over, Director of Radiology. “PACS revolutionizes the way the organization, physicians, and patients handle medical images, allowing us to provide improved patient care and improve Radiology service levels.”
With this new system, Radiologists and other imaging professionals will examine and report their findings on images using digital technology, instead of the current method of developing images on film, looking at them on view boxes, and then storing them in the film file room. Referring physicians and other authorized personnel will then be able to access patients’ images on personal computers around the hospital, in their private offices, from home, and from anywhere else that they are able to get a secure connection. This enhanced accessibility will potentially lessen the time it takes for physicians to review images and will decrease film waste.
Other potential benefits of PACS include:
• Allows for viewing of images from multiple locations
• Allows for viewing of images simultaneously with other physicians
• Eliminates lost films
• Provides web-based access to images
• Reduces time spent on film transport
• Delivers images faster for interpretation and viewing
